Oklahoma Railway Museum: OKC

Hey, friend – welcome back to another post! Today, we’re talking about the Oklahoma Railway Museum in Oklahoma City. Let’s go look around!

P.S. I visited this museum over a year ago and forgot to write a blog post about it somehow… so, here we are now! I hope you enjoy the cool photos of trains!

History of the Oklahoma Railway Museum

In 1970, the Central Oklahoma Railfan Club applied to join the National Railway Historical Society (NRHS). They became known as the Central Oklahoma Chapter. These train enthusiasts were active in the railroad community for the next two decades which laid the foundation for the Oklahoma Railway Museum.

In 1997, the Central Oklahoma Chapter of the NRHS were given access to use the old Missouri-Kansas-Texas track that lays between NE 16th Street and NE 36th Street in Oklahoma City. Museum volunteers helped to restore the tracks and keep them clean. This gave the group a space to give demonstrations with their equipment.

In 1999, the Chapter was able to purchase a 3-acres along the tracks. They cleared the land, created a parking lot, built the restrooms, and began designing a museum building.

The Oklahoma Railway Museum has grown in the decades since. They have four operating locomotives and several historic cars you can walk around.

Their goal is to “help people experience the unique thrill of a historic passenger train ride.”

This museum is still growing and has expansion plans on their website! I can’t wait to see what the future holds for this museum.

Lots of Cool Trains!

Concluding Thoughts

I visited this museum a few years ago and found the photos on my computer! I realized that I had never written a blog post about it. I need to go back one day and ride the train!

This is definitely a cool place to check out if you love trains!

Happy Traveling! I’ll talk to ya soon! 🙂
