Hi there, my name is Kaitlyn Weldon! I like to wear a lot of hats literally and figuratively! My passion is telling the history and stories of the American West.
I have a Master’s Degree in American history from Oklahoma State University with a focus on women’s history in the American West in the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries. My favorite research topics include women’s history, rodeo history, Wild West shows, cowboys, and cowgirls.
“The Active Historian” has been my passion project since June 2020. I started this blog as a way to share my research, but it has grown into so much more. I have had several opportunities to work with historians and content creators from across the world sharing my love of Western history and the Western lifestyle.
You can follow me on Instagram, @the_active_historian for more day-to-day content. I share the books I’m reading, places I’m traveling, good food, Western fashion, and more. We have a good time there!

When I’m not doing research or writing for my blog, you can find me at a museum, historic site, rodeo or PBR event.
I also enjoy photography and am always planning or doing photoshoots with friends or myself. You can view my portfolio here.

Honors & Awards
In 2024, I was named a member of COWGIRL Magazine‘s 30 Under 30 Class of 2024. This has been the biggest blessing and I consider it an honor of a lifetime. I have met so many great people doing amazing things for women in the Western industry through this program.

In August 2025, I was named to NextGen 30 Under 30 (Oklahoma) in the Adult and Higher Education category for work with my day job. I am excited to make new connections throughout the year with this organization!
In August 2025, I received the Founder’s Award from Oklahoma City Young Professionals at the Horizons Awards.
I graduated from YP Leadership Program Class III hosted by the Oklahoma City Young Professionals in October 2025. My graduation speech was titled, “Redefining the Leader Within.”
