Hey, Friend! Welcome back to another post. Today, we’re going to downtown Edmond, Oklahoma. This building is on the National Register of Historic Places – let’s get started!

History

The Citizens Bank of Edmond was organized on Thursday, April 18, 1901. The stockholders included W.M. Hunt, W.H. Tuttle, G.H. Fink, J.G. Imel, Wm. Huffman, and one unnamed person. The capital stock was $10,000.

The Citizens’ State Bank in Edmond, Oklahoma began operating before Oklahoma became a state.

In September 1901, the stockholders elected the following board of directors: W.H. Tuttle (President), John Place (Vice President), W.M. Hunt (Cashier), J.G. Imel, W.J. Huffman, and G.H. Fink. E.H. Mann was selected as the book-keeper.

The building was 25×80 feet and two stories tall. It was built of similar red sandstone like the Peoples’ Bank across the street. The Citizens’ State Bank building shows the typical style of Territorial architecture using red sandstone. The stone was quarried not too far from Edmond.

“The new bank building is the handsomest building in town and does great credit to Mr. Tuttle who has had charge of its construction.” (“New Bank Organizes.” Edmond Enterprise, September 12, 1901)

The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

In 2026, the building houses a couple of businesses. You can walk along Broadway in downtown Edmond to see this building. There are a lot of neat shops and murals in this area as well.

“This building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places – March 1980.

The native sandstone building is typical to the style prevalent in the Oklahoma Territory. It is the last territorial building in Edmond surviving with only slight modifications.”
